Elementary Lead Teacher
Spruce Pine Montessori School, founded in 1972, is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. We serve approximately 65 students and act as the only alternative education program to public schools in four counties wide. Our facilities are lovely, the staff are welcoming and highly skilled, and our family community is actively involved in the life of the school. The successful candidate will enjoy living and working in a somewhat isolated, rural environment.
Our Elementary program has approximately 25 students enrolled, with roughly 15 in Lower Elementary and 10 in Upper Elementary. We have one teacher certified in 6-12 on staff and are looking for another teacher, either certified in 6-9 or 9-12.
In addition to the traditional classroom work of a Montessori Upper Elementary, students participate in service work in our community, go on many field trips, and an annual campout. In the past, students have also produced a school play and traveled to nearby cities, such as Charleston and Washington, DC. Assistance for all extracurriculars comes from the Elementary assistant and parent volunteers.
The lead teacher is a guide who helps direct the children’s activities academically, spiritually, emotionally, and physically in a prepared Montessori environment that challenges each child to reach his or her fullest potential in these developmental areas, in accordance with Montessori philosophy. Summer Camp Teachers
Every summer, we run two weekly camps - one for children ages 3-6, with 10-20 campers enrolled each week, and one for children ages 6-10, with 5-10 campers enrolled each week. The summer camp shares many of the same philosophies as our regular school-year Montessori program, but is not traditionally run by a certified Montessori teacher, so is less academic and more experiential in nature. In addition, because of the warm weather, much of our summer camp explorations happen outside.
The Lead Teacher(s) will be responsible for all classroom preparation and lesson-planning. An assistant will help with the day-to-day running of the camp. Some years, we hire one Lead Teacher to teach for the entire summer and other years, we hire multiple teachers to teach on a weekly basis.
The summer camp for ages 3-6 will run from June 12- August 4. We already have a teacher to cover the weeks in June, but are hiring Lead Teachers to work starting in July through the first week of August. Our elementary summer camp for ages 6-10 will run from June 12- July 7.
Interested applicants should have an idea in mind for a week-long thematic study, or if interested in working more than one week, several weeks of thematic study. For the full job description, click here.
The Office Manager will act as the school’s primary administrator, providing support to the Head of School, teachers, and parents. Find the full job description here.
